The Class 170 Returns to the Midlands – CrossCountry Comes to Train Sim World!

Birmingham’s rails are about to get even busier. On 29th July 2025, players will return to the iconic Lickey Incline and beyond as two new versions of the Class 170 “Turbostar” roll into Train Sim World, courtesy of Rivet Games.
This update is more than just a loco pack—it’s a landmark moment. It marks the debut of the CrossCountry license in Train Sim World, introducing a fan-favorite operator that’s been long-requested by the community.
🚄 What’s in the Pack?
Originally built for Rivet’s Fife Circle Line in Train Sim World 4, the ScotRail Class 170/4 has now been reimagined in two brand-new subclasses:
- Class 170/5
- Class 170/6
Each comes packed with authentic detail variations, including:
- Original-style headlights
- Updated cab detailing
- Refined interiors
- New audio tweaks
- Multiple branding options
And now, for the first time ever in TSW, the Turbostar arrives in:
- West Midlands Railway livery – a perfect match for the Cross-City Line, adding continuity alongside the Class 323 EMU.
- CrossCountry livery – covering a vast regional network that stretches well beyond the Midlands, now finally represented in-game.
🛤 Tackle the Lickey Incline in Diesel
The infamous Lickey Incline, one of the steepest mainline gradients in the UK, now beckons you to climb it using diesel traction. This gives players a whole new challenge—swapping electric units for the grunty, turbocharged Class 170.
Combined with the growing ecosystem of Train Sim World layers, the Class 170s will naturally slot into existing timetables, filling out Birmingham with realistic regional traffic across both AI and playable services.
📝 Editor’s Opinion
Rivet Games has done more than just port over a unit—they’ve delivered a pair of richly detailed, highly requested locomotives that not only enhance gameplay but expand the TSW universe in meaningful ways. The CrossCountry livery opens a new chapter for the sim, and seeing it glide through Birmingham New Street is a milestone moment. Pair that with a fresh challenge on the Lickey Incline and you’ve got a DLC that hits the sweet spot between realism, nostalgia, and gameplay variety.
📅 Coming 29th July 2025
Prepare to revisit the Cross-City Line in a new light—powered by diesel, dressed in fresh colors, and packed with potential. The Midlands just got a lot more CrossCountry.
