MBTA Commuter Route Now Available in Train Sim World!

Boston rail fans — it’s time to head west! The MBTA Commuter route has officially arrived in Train Sim World, extending operations from the familiar Boston–Providence line out toward Worcester, Massachusetts. With a brand-new locomotive, improved realism, and expanded freight potential, this add-on delivers a fresh and exciting experience for U.S. commuter rail fans.
🚄 What’s New in the MBTA Commuter Route?
Building upon the foundation of the Boston–Providence route, MBTA Commuter brings a broader, more varied simulation of real-world operations seen across MBTA’s commuter rail system.
🆕 HSP46 Locomotive — A TSW First!
Making its Train Sim World debut, the HSP46 adds a sleek, modern diesel option for MBTA services. With its contemporary cab, stop-start functionality, and sharp styling, the HSP46 brings a newer generation of motive power to the sim — and captures the feel of Boston’s evolving rail scene.
🚆 Bi-Level Coaches
Adding to the realism, the route now features MBTA’s distinctive bi-level commuter cars, which appear in mixed consists just as they do in real-world operations. Combined with the classic F40PH-3C and single-level coaches from the Boston–Providence route, this makes for a richly varied timetable with a modern, dynamic look.
🛤️ A Focus on Detail: Scheduling & Signaling
A great deal of work has gone into building a realistic and engaging schedule, as well as improving signaling fidelity for the route. These behind-the-scenes improvements enhance immersion and make each service feel true to life.
You can read more about these developments in the pre-order article, which highlights the care taken to bring Boston’s commuter network to life.
🚛 Expand with Freight & Amtrak Services
MBTA Commuter isn’t just about passenger runs. The route also supports freight operations, including rare MBTA flat car services and local CSX freight movements between Framingham and Worcester.
To unlock all additional freight services, players will need the following compatible add-ons:
- Sand Patch Grade
- BNSF SD70ACe
- Sherman Hill
